2. Exam Pattern Analysis

The exam consists of 120 questions (480 marks) with a 1/4 negative marking penalty.

• The 50-60% Rule: Most students easily answer 50-60% of the paper.
• Rank Deciders: Your final rank is determined by the “Tuff/Very Tuff” questions, which are typically found in the Principles of Agronomy and Technical sections.
• Target Score: To secure a top rank, you should aim for a score between 80% to 85%, which requires preparing to attempt 90% to 95% of the paper.

🌾 Field Crops Strategy

While staple food and commercial crops are frequent in question papers, oilseeds and fodder crops are often ‘dark horses’. Rather than rote memorization, try to understand the underlying logic behind specific seed, soil, nutrient, and water requirements.

🌱 Weed & Problem Soils

For weed management, prepare for crucial questions on problematic and aquatic weeds, often tested in matching columns. For problem soils, deeply understand the chemistry, characteristics, and reclamation processes.

🧮 Mastering Numericals

Numericals provide a massive competitive edge. Master the rules for Rotational Intensity (e.g., converting durations to complete years), Water Use Efficiency (Crop vs. Field WUE), and precise fertilizer application formulas.
