Unit I

General Agriculture

  • Core Concepts: Importance of agriculture, forestry, and livestock in the national economy, and the basic principles of crop production.
  • Crop Health: Major diseases and pests affecting crops.
  • Economics and Extension: Elementary principles of agricultural economics and agri-extension, along with important rural development programs in India.
  • Institutions: The organizational setup of agricultural research, education, and extension in India.
Unit II

Mathematics

  • Algebra and Set Theory: Real and complex numbers, polynomials, roots, and de Moivre’s theorem. Elements of set theory including De Morgan’s laws, vector spaces, linear independence, and orthogonality.
  • Matrices: Addition, multiplication, rank of a matrix, determinants, inverse of a matrix, solutions for systems of linear equations, and characteristic roots and vectors.
  • Sequence and Geometry: Convergence of infinite sequences and series (tests for convergence, absolute convergence) and two-dimensional coordinate geometry (line, circle, parabola, ellipse, and hyperbola).
  • Calculus: Limits, differentiation, Taylor’s and Maclaurin’s theorems, mean-value theorem, maxima/minima, partial differentiation, Euler’s theorem, total derivatives, Jacobians, simple integration methods, definite and double integrals, change of order, Gamma and Beta functions.
  • Differential Equations & Numerical Analysis: First-order, Exact, Bernoulli’s, and Clairaut’s equations; particular integrals. Finite differences, interpolation, numerical differentiation/integration, difference equations, and Newton-Raphson method.
Unit III

Statistics (Core Subject)

  • Basics: Definition, use, and limitations of statistics, along with frequency distributions and curves.
  • Measures: Central tendency (Arithmetic, Geometric, and Harmonic mean, Median, Mode) and Dispersion (Range, Mean deviation, Quartile deviation, Variance, and Coefficient of Variation).
  • Probability: Concepts, laws of addition and multiplication, conditional probability, Bayes’ theorem, and specific distributions (Binomial, multinomial, Poisson, and normal).
  • Sampling and Testing: Random sampling, standard error, tests of significance, types of errors, null hypothesis, level of significance. SND tests, Student’s t-test (single, two samples, paired), F-test, and Chi-Square test.
  • Advanced Topics: Correlation, Regression, associated significance tests, basic principles of Experimental Designs, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Completely Randomized Design (CRD), and Randomized Block Design (RBD).
Unit IV

Computers and Bioinformatics

  • Fundamentals & OS: Input/output devices, memory, hardware, software, booting, viruses, antivirus programs. DOS commands (FORMAT, DIR, COPY, PATH, etc.) and WINDOWS ecosystem.
  • Software Applications: MS Word, MS Excel (spreadsheets, in-built statistical functions, data analysis tools, creating graphs), MS PowerPoint, and MS Access (database concepts).
  • Programming and Internet: Flow charts, algorithms, programming languages (BASIC, FORTRAN, C), World Wide Web, web browsing, and electronic mail.
